Sale Price $450.00
GERALD FORD. Football Jersey signed: "Gerald R. Ford" on numeral on front. Licensed Wilson blue University of Michigan jersey with yellow lettering, 100% nylon, size XL. Imprinted: "Michigan/1" on front and "1" on verso. Univiersity of Michigan logos at upper portion of both sleeves. Original tag attached to left sleeve. Gerald Ford (1913-2006) was a center on the University of Michigan's Wolverines during their undefeated 1932 and 1933 national championship seasons. Named MVP in 1935, his senior year, Ford had tackled Jay Berwanger, the winner of the first Heisman Trophy (1935), in 1934, receiving a scar that he would proudly display in his later years. On October 8, 1994, during half-time of a game between the University of Michigan and rival Michigan State, Ford's #48 jersey was the last jersey retired by the University of Michigan (the school has retired only a total of five jerseys over its storied football history). Although the press had a field day with Ford's mishaps, playing up several stumbles and an incident of one of his wayward golf balls hitting a spectator, the 38th U.S. President (1974-1977), a former All-American, was one of the most athletic of all U.S. Presidents. After starring at the University of Michigan, Ford received offers from two professional football teams, the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers, but he opted to study law at Yale after his graduation. There, Ford was a boxing coach and assistant varsity football coach (1935-1940) before receiving his law degree in 1942. He had also taken up golf as a youngster, and his handicap was 12 several times during his life (at the age of 80, Ford carried a 15-17 handicap). He also played tennis and enjoyed skiing. At his death on December 26, 2006, Ford was the longest-lived former U.S. President, surpassing Ronald Reagan, who also lived to the age of 93. Signature is light but completely legible. Jersey is lightly wrinkled. Fine condition.
