GERALD FORD
Color postcard of Gerald R. Ford at his desk.
Post Card signed: "Jerry Ford" on verso. Color, 5½x3½. Pictures Congressman Ford at his desk on front. Captioned on verso: "Rep. Gerald R. Ford/Fifth District, Michigan". Not stamped or filled in. Gerald R. Ford (1913-2006) began his political career in 1948, when he was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-first Congress from the 5th District in Michigan, which included Grand Rapids. Ford was reelected to the 12 succeeding Congresses, serving from January 3, 1949 until his resignation from the United States House of Representatives December 6, 1973, to become the 40th Vice President of the U.S. He had served as Republican Minority Leader from 1965-1973. Ford was the first Vice President to be nominated by the President and confirmed by the Congress pursuant to the 25th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. He was sworn in as the 38th President of the U.S. on August 9, 1974, when President Richard Nixon resigned, becoming the only man to hold the two highest offices in the land without being elected to either. Ford ran for a full four-year term in 1976 but was defeated by Jimmy Carter. He celebrated his 93rd birthday on July 14, 2006, becoming only the second U.S. President to reach that age (Ronald Reagan lived for 93 years and 120 days). Before his death on December 26, 2006, Ford surpassed Reagan to become the longest-lived former U.S. President. Slightly creased at upper left corner of verso. Lightly soiled at caption and at blank right edge. Light tape stains (barely visible) at upper margin and lower portion of desk on front. Fine condition.
