GERALD FORD and BILLY MARTIN
Black and white 9x7 press release photograph, signed by both and shown arm in arm at the 1978 All-Star Game
Printed Photograph Signed in Ink: "Gerald Ford", "Billy Martin". B/w 9x7. Associated Press caption at left edge. Shown together, Martin in Yankees uniform, at the 1978 Major League All-Star Game. A former All-American football player at the University of Michigan and a navy veteran of World War II, GERALD R. FORD (1913-2006) represented Michigan in the U.S. Congress (1949-1973), serving as Minority Leader (1965-1973). Nominated and confirmed for Vice President in 1973 under the terms of the 25th Amendment, following Spiro Agnew's resignation, he became the 38th President on August 9, 1974, after Nixon's resignation. Nominated by the Republican Party for a full term in 1976, Ford was narrowly defeated by Democrat Jimmy Carter. Always a sports fan, Ford had the leisure to pursue this passion after leaving public office. Billy Martin (1928-1989) managed the Twins (1969), Tigers (1971-1973), Rangers (1973-1975), Yankees (1975-1978, 1979, 1983, 1985, 1988) and Athletics (1980-1982), beating the Royals in the 1981 Division Series, losing the American League Championship Series to the Yankees. He was hired and fired five times by Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and would have been hired once again in 1990 when the Yankees finished last, had he not been killed in a car accident on Christmas Day, 1989. Minor surface creases. "Gerald R. Ford" signature light but legible. Damaged at top right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
