GERALD R. FORD
Gerald R. Ford sends a typed letter of thanks for the letter.
Typed Letter Signed: "Jerry Ford" as House Minority Leader, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1966 March 16. To Dr. Robert R. Citron, Kankakee, Illinois. In full: "This is just a note to acknowledge and thank you for your recent letter commenting on the current state of affairs. As you know, I share your concern and am doing everything possible. However we will need all the help we can get in the elections this fall if we are going to do something about the problems that exist. Kindest personal regards. Sincerely," In 1966, President Johnson's failure to end the Vietnam War and his preoccupation with the conflict began to interfere with his ability to influence events at home. Facing mounting demands for reductions in domestic spending, he did not call for the anticipated expansion of the war on poverty. LBJ also did not battle as strenuously for Civil Rights as he had in 1964 and 1965, and, for the first time, Congress defeated one of his Civil Rights bills. Then, the 1966 congressional elections weakened his authority as the Republicans gained 47 seats in the House and three in the Senate. Slightly creased. Horizontal fold underlines signature, touching the "J", first "r" and "y" in Jerry. Staple holes at upper left blank corner. Fine condition.
