GERALD R. FORD
The Congressman will continue to support President Eisenhower's efforts to maintain a balanced budget.
Typed Letter Signed: "Jerry Ford" as Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1959 April 27. To constituent Thomas Gaerther, Grand Rapids, Michigan. In full: "I have your letter endorsing a sound fiscal policy and urging my support of essential expenditures only. I am in wholehearted agreement with you on this matter, and I can assure you that I support completely President Eisenhower's program of a balanced budget in this regard. A number of indications recently show that popular support is growing for the President's vigorous efforts to maintain a balanced budget. I certainly do not subscribe to the policy advocated by some politicians and economists that a balanced budget is antiquated, and feel that in any time except for that of great national emergency, we who are getting the benefits of federal spending should be willing to pay the bill for it. I can assure you that as a member of the Committee on Appropriations I will continue to vigorously support the President's budget and his sound fiscal policy." Lightly creased. Fine condition. With original postmarked envelope bearing printed frank. Ford represented Michigan in the House of Representatives from January 3, 1949 to December 6, 1973, when he was sworn in as Nixon's Vice President. Two items.
