GERALD R. FORD
Ford urges the reelection of Reagan and Bush, complimenting John
Glenn and calling the Mondale and Ferraro ticket "too liberal".
Typed Letter Signed: "Gerald R. Ford", 1p, 7¼x10½. (Rancho
Mirage, California), 1984 August 31. To Charles S. Montroll, Chevy Chase,
Maryland. In full: "Your kind comments on my Republican Convention
speech, I deeply appreciate. As you could tell, I feel very strongly that
President Reagan and Vice President Bush should be re-elected. Domestically,
Reagan and Bush have turned our economy around and we are on the road to a
prosperous future. They inherited from Carter-Mondale inflation at 131½%, a
prime interest rate of 21½% and unemployment that was about to soar. Today,
under Reagan-Bush, inflation is 4%, prime interest rate 13%, employment way up
(five million more jobs than a year ago) and unemployment down by two and
one-half million. This is real progress and the future looks even better.
Senator John Glenn has done a solid job for his Ohio constituents and the
country. I though (sic) he would win the nomination. If he had, he would have
been a tough competitor in November. In all honesty, Mondale and Ferraro are
much too liberal for the problems our nation faces. I appreciate your thoughtful
approach on how you should vote November 6th. I hope you can support Reagan and
Bush." In one of the greatest landslides in U.S. history, on November 6,
1984, Reagan-Bush defeated Mondale-Ferraro by 54.5 million to 37.6 million
popular votes, 525-13 electoral votes and 49 states to Minnesota (Mondale's
home) and the District of Columbia. Letters of a former President discussing
a future President's election are rarely encountered and very desirable.
