GERALD R. FORD
The Congressman calls for "a meaningful peace instead of a meaningless settlement" in Vietnam.
Typed Letter Signed: "Jerry Ford" as House Minority Leader, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1965 September 14. To Mr. And Mrs. Thomas B. Meldau, Los Angeles. In full: "I wish to acknowledge and thank you for your recent letter calling for a meaningful peace instead of a meaningless settlement. As you know I feel the same way that you do. Thank you for your kind message and support and for taking the time to write me." Ford, representing Michigan in Congress since 1949, had just been elected Republican leader of the House on January 4, 1965. It wasn't until January 27, 1973, that the United States, North Vietnam, South Vietnam and the Viet Cong provisional government signed a cease-fire agreement in Paris, in effect ending the Vietnam War. It wasn't until April 30, 1975, when Ford was President of the United States, that the South Vietnam government announced their unconditional surrender to the Viet Cong, officially ending the war. Light horizontal fold touches the descenders of the "J" and "y" in signature. Fine condition.
