He thanks planners of the National Bicentennial celebration.
Typed Note signed: "Gerald R. Ford", below facsimile signature, 1p, 6¾x8¾. No place, no date, no addressee. On White House stationery. In full: "I warmly commend all who participate in plans for the celebration of our National Bicentennial. Your efforts are symbolic of your deep sense of patriotism and civic pride. They also reflect the vitality and spirit of America. I wholeheartedly welcome your commitment to help make our Nation's to hundredth birthday a fitting and memorable occasion for all of us." Gerald R. Ford (1913-2006), the 38th President, issued a proclamation on December 31, 1975, calling on all Americans to celebrate the nation's 200th anniversary by publicizing "the shaping events, people and ideas of our historic beginnings." Ford's itinerary during the climactic week of the bicentennial event include opening the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian (July 1), delivering Pennsylvania speeches at Independence Hall and Valley Forge (July 4), and visiting President Jefferson's home (Monticello, Virginia on July 5). As the President's note implies, millions of Americans helped plan and then celebrate America's 200th birthday at the community level. Slightly soiled in lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
