Autograph Envelope unsigned, 5x4, postmarked Washington, D.C., January 12, 1887. Grover Cleveland addressed the envelope to "Charles A. Hickok Esq/Beckford/Pennsylvania". Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) was Governor of New York (1883-1885) before serving as the 22nd and 24th President (1885-1889, 1893-1897). In a series of close Presidential elections, Cleveland defeated James Blaine, lost to Benjamin Harrison, and then defeated Harrison in a rematch, thus becoming the only U.S. President to serve nonconsecutive terms. For a span of over 50 years (1861-1913), he was the only Democrat to occupy the White House. Soiled, ragged edges, stamp removed, tape stain on verso (no show through).
