an Honorary Member of the Cleveland Club of Santa Cruz and I beg leave to
express my thanks for the kind remembrance there manifested. The principles
and purposes of the Club as stated by you are worthy of the support of every
patriotic citizen and in the advancement of their principles and purposes. I
wish for your Club the fullest success. May I be allowed to also express the
hope that the maintenance of true democratic faith, may never be subordinated to
the interest of any individual." This letter was written two months after
22nd president grover cleveland left the White House after
one term in office. In the presidential election of 1888, California, New
York and 18 other states went Republican, and President Cleveland lost his bid
for reelection. If those states had gone Democratic, he would have won. The

Cleveland to the White House. At the June 21-23, 1892 Democratic National
Convention, Grover Cleveland received his party's nomination on the first
ballot. On November 8, 1892, the former ex-President defeated incumbent
Republican President Benjamin Harrison by 277-145 electoral votes, carrying
California, New York and 21 other states, including Harrison's home state of
Indiana. Lightly creased at upper corners and at left blank margin. Usual folds,
vertical fold touches between "a" and "n" in Cleveland. Glue remnants on verso
of both sheets, with light show through. Overall, fine condition.
