President, 1p, 4½x6½. Executive Mansion, Washington, 1886 June 9.
Begins: "My dear Sir". In full: "Please accept my
sincere thanks for the beautiful book which you so kindly sent me. I anticipate
much pleasure in its perusal, and shall surely note and look the
introduction." On June 2, 1886, exactly one week earlier, 49-year-old
bachelor President Grover Cleveland married his 21-year-old ward, Frances
Folsom, in the White House. When Frances Folsom's father, Oscar Folsom, died,
she was 11 and his law partner, Grover Cleveland, became her guardian. "Uncle
Cleve" took care of Frances and her mother as if they were his own. President
and Mrs. Cleveland spent their six-day honeymoon in a cottage in Deer Park,
Maryland in the Allegheny Mountains, then returned to the White House.
Irregularly cut at bottom edge, probably removing the name of the recipient.
