PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 07/03/1884 - HFSID 27722
Price: $1,950.00
GROVER CLEVELAND. ALS: "Grover Cleveland" as Governor of
New York, 1p, 5½x8½. Buffalo, 1884 July 3. Date in another hand. To
an unnamed General. In full: "I obtained the photographs more easily
than I expected and enclose them (not present) for the ladies."
Bachelor Grover Cleveland had been Governor of New York since January 1, 1883.
This letter is written on stationery of "Bissell, Sicard &
Goodyear/Counselors at Law". The law firm of Bass, Cleveland & Bissell
was formed in 1873. In 1877, for health reasons, Lyman K. Bass left the firm and
relocated to Colorado. In December 1881, after Cleveland was elected Mayor of
Buffalo, the law firm became Cleveland, Bissell & Sicard as George J. Sicard
was admitted as a partner. In 1883, upon becoming Governor, Grover
Cleveland retired from the law firm and Charles W. Goodyear joined the firm,
which had become one of the most distinguished legal firms in western New York.
Just eight days after Cleveland wrote this letter, he was nominated for
President at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He was elected
President the following November 4th. Wilson S. Bissell, Cleveland's law partner
from 1873-1883, served as his Postmaster General from 1893-1895. Lightly
creased. Slightly soiled. Minor smudges. Folds, horizontal fold touches "G" and
"Cl" of signature. Mounting remnant on verso (no show through). Overall, fine
condition.
