PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 12/06/1900 - HFSID 15630
Price: $1,950.00
GROVER CLEVELAND
Recalling recipient's support in the 1892 election.
ALS: "Grover Cleveland", 2p, 5¼x6¾, front and verso. Westland, Princeton, New Jersey,
1900 December 6. To Colonel William L. Brown, New York. In full: "I was glad to hear
from you again and read the letter of Senator O'Connor which you enclosed, with much interest.
It brought to my mind, not only the victory of 1892 but the important part you took in bringing it
about-and above all your personal friendship towards me throughout the contest. Do you
remember the welcome I extended to the Democratic Association of Democratic Clubs, pretty early
one morning, when you attended and encouraged me, by praising my little speech? I remember it
with much pleasure - also the speech you made at the Manhattan Club on the occasion of a lunch
and reception, when you made me such a very good and great man. I am inclined to think you
exaggerated the matter just a little bit; but it is pleasant to recall even exaggeration when it
manifests such friendly feeling. Wishing you all good things." Separated at mid-horizontal fold,
which had been inexpertly repaired with tape on the front touching some text, 1 at the left
blank area of fold on verso. Overall, fine condition. With original stamped, postmarked
envelope addressed by Cleveland to: "Hon. Wm L. Brown/Times Building/New York". On
verso in pencil (unknown hand): "mentioned in this letter Senator O'Connor Republican leader
of the U.S. Senate was a friend of W.L. Brown." Soiled, nicked, torn and worn edges.
O'CONNOR was probably a New York State Senator. CLEVELAND's 1892 victory is
unique in U.S. history. It is the only election in which a former U.S. President was elected
President. Cleveland, the 22nd President, had lost his bid for reelection in 1888 to former
Indiana Senator Benjamin Harrison. In 1892, 23rd President Harrison ran for reelection, but
Cleveland defeated him to become 24th President. Two items, both encapsulated.
