Appointment of a Postmaster at Manitowac, Wisconsin.
Partly Printed DS: "Grover Cleveland" as 22nd U.S. President and "Wm. F. Vilas" as Postmaster General, 1p, 16½x13½. Washington, 1886 February 3. In part: "Know ye, That, reposing special trust and confidence in the Intelligence, Diligence, and Discretion of Adolph Piening, the President of the United States nominated, and, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, I do appoint him Postmaster at Manitowac, in the County of Manitowac, State of Wisconsin...." Manitowac is about 70 miles north of Milwaukee on Lake Michigan. Manitowac County records show that an ADOLPH PIENING was born in Germany on December 23, 1834 and that, on July 23, 1862, he married Laura Knapp. WILLIAM FREEMAN VILAS (1840-1908) served President CLEVELAND as Postmaster General (1885-1888) and Secretary of the Interior (1888-1889) before representing Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate (1891-1897). 2¾-inch diameter gold seal affixed at lower left. Light transference from seal touches "land". Folds, light vertical fold touches the "V". 2 pinhead-size holes at cross folds, not touching text. Pencil erasures and 3-inch separation at upper blank border (all paper intact). Overall, fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 39¼x21.
