Civil Appointment signed: "Grover Cleveland" as President; "Wm L. Wilson" as Postmaster General, 18x14½. Washington, D.C., 1896 May 8. Printed document with handwritten details, appointing Truman Lewis as Postmaster at Sidney, Delaware, effective from 1896 April 16. GROVER CLEVELAND (1837-1908), formerly Mayor of Buffalo and Governor of New York (1883-1885) served as the 22nd and 24th President (1885-1889, 1893-1897). He won the popular vote all three times he ran (1884, 1888, 1892), losing the electoral vote and the presidency in 1888 to Benjamin Harrison. He was the only Democrat elected President in more than a half century between the departure of Buchanan (1861) and the inauguration of Wilson (1913). WILLIAM LYNE WILSON (1843-1900), a Confederate private during the Civil War, practiced law in West Virginia before becoming President of the University of West Virginia (1882). He was co-author of the Wilson-Gorman Tariff, which fulfilled President Cleveland's promise to lower tariff rates. He was US Postmaster General from 1895 to 1897. An advocate of the Gold Standard, he refused to support Democratic Presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan in 1896. Wilson spent his final years as President of Washington & Lee College in Virginia. Horizontal and vertical fold creases, not affecting signatures. Creased and soiled. Overall, fine condition.
