Just eight days earlier, on July 8, 1884, New York Governor Grover Cleveland received his party's presidential nomination on the second ballot with 683 delegate votes (547 votes were needed for nomination). Cleveland, Governor of New York from 1883-1884, instituted a number of reforms and incurred the wrath of Tammany Hall for refusing to endorse measures for the personal gain of members of the political machine.
