GROVER CLEVELAND
To apprehend a fugitive from the justice of the United States.
Partly Printed Presidential Warrant signed: "Grover Cleveland" as President, 1p, 8x10. Washington, 1889 February 28. In full: "I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State [Thomas F. Bayard] to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to a warrant authorizing John R. Murphy to take into custody Frank H. Aldrich, alias C. Stanley, alias Frank H. Holman a fugitive from the justice of the United States, dated this day, and signed by me; and for so doing this shall be his warrant." By definition from 18 United States Code, a fugitive from justice is "any person who has fled from any State to avoid prosecution for a crime or to avoid giving testimony in any criminal proceeding." Evidently, Aldrick alias Stanley alias Homan had fled the United States. Cleveland had personal experience with apprehending criminals. As sheriff of Erie County, Buffalo (1871-1873), he personally carried out the duties of his office. The "Buffalo Express" on September 7, 1872 reported that at the hanging of a man convicted of killing his mother, "the sheriff stood at the gallows with his right hand on the rod attached to the trap bolt". Lightly creased at lower right edge. Fine condition.
