TLS: "Grover Cleveland", 1p, 73/4x101/4. Princeton, N.J., 1907 March 5. The former 22nd and 24th U.S. President writes to Hayne Davis, Esq., Secretary of the National Arbitration and Peace Congress, New York City. In full: "Your recent letter requesting me to preside at the meeting to be held on the last day of the National Arbitration and Peace Congress on April 17th, is before me. I am very sorry to be obliged to say that it is utterly impossible for me to comply with this request. I am perfectly satisfied that you have not the slightest idea of the demands made upon my time and the exactions which a recent assumption of new duties involves." In 1907 Cleveland, who had retired to Princeton, New Jersey after leaving the White House, became President of the Association of Presidents of Life Insurance Companies. The organization lobbied against restrictive government regulations against the industry. Two years earlier, the former President joined the board of trustees and was Rebate Referee of the Equitable Life and Mutual and New York Life Insurance Companies after the company had come under investigation. Cleveland's busy retirement also included an active interest in Princeton University. He became a trustee in 1901 and gave occasional lectures to the students. 1/2-inch slit in blank portion has been repaired on verso, 3/4-inch slit in lower blank portion, lightly soiled at left blank margin. Vertical fold touches the "n" in Cleveland. Overall, fine condition.
