GROVER CLEVELAND
The former President doubts whether he will attend a dinner for New York City Mayor George B. McClellan.
TLS: "Grover Cleveland", 1p, 8½x11. Princeton, N.J., 1903 December 26. To H.L. Bowlby, Esq., Asbury Park, N.J. In full: "I have just returned from a Southern trip and find an invitation awaiting me to attend the dinner to be given Mayor-elect McClellan on the 4th of Jan'y. I have not accepted this invitation and it is very doubtful whether I shall do so, I have therefore given no thought to the preparation of an address to be made on that occasion." George B. McClellan was the son and namesake of the Civil War General who was defeated for President by Lincoln in 1864. He served in Congress as a Democrat from March 4, 1895 to December 21, 1903, five days before this letter was written, when he resigned, having been elected Mayor of New York City. Folds, one vertical touches the "C" in Cleveland. Transference of type lightly touches signature. Three file holes at blank right edge. Tear at top right vertical fold (stops at printed date). Otherwise, fine condition.
