HARRY S TRUMAN
Inscribed photo with very rare Truman signature, taken at a dinner at
the "Truman-Evans Dinner" at the Truman Presidential Library in 1959. Evans,
Secretary of the Library foundation, was a longtime Truman poker buddy. Bess and
Margaret Truman are among the guests shown.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Mr. & Mrs. Fred Goldman,
Jr./From Harry S. & Bess W. Truman/10-31-1959" by Harry Truman. B/w,
9¾x8. Harry S Truman Library photograph (stamped on verso). Written (unknown
hand) on verso: "Truman-Evans Dinner/Truman Library October 31, 1959", so
Truman's handwritten date on the photo was the date of the dinner, not the date
on which he signed. Former First Lady Bess Truman and daughter Margaret Truman
are shown in the picture, both seated at the left front table. The Truman
Library had been dedicated on July 6, 1957. A year after this photograph was
taken (from October 8-November 4, 1960), Truman would embark on a cross-country
speaking tour on behalf of Democratic presidential candidate, John F.
Kennedy. THOMAS LYNN EVANS (1896-1970) was a Kansas City businessman
who served as Secretary of Harry S Truman Library, Inc. Evans also
introduced Truman in the 1930's to the 822 Club, a group of Kansas City
businessmen who used Room 822 of the Kansas City Club for poker games and to
evade the restrictions of Prohibition. Truman, an avid poker player, was made an
official member when he became President. HARRY S TRUMAN (1884-1972)
served as 33rd U.S. President from 1945-1953. The former U.S. Senator
from Missouri (1935-1945), who had been elected FDR's Vice President
in 1944, assumed the presidency upon FDR's death on April 12, 1945. Faced with
the ordeal of ending WWII (1939-1945), Truman ordered the atomic bombings on
Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9). He fought the Cold War with the
Truman Doctrine, a policy reducing Communist pressures on Greece and Turkey
through economic and military aid. During his second term, Truman sent U.S.
forces to South Korea to repel invading North Korean troops. After leaving
the presidency, Truman returned to Independence, Missouri, where he wrote his
memoirs and was actively involved in the creation and expansion of the Truman
Library. Worthy of further research. Creased at lower left and upper and
lower right corners and lower right background. Fine condition.
