HARRY S TRUMAN
Sepia publicity photograph of Harry Truman in the oval office talking
to Basil O'Connor.
Photograph inscribed and signed:"Kindest regards to Hon.
Basil O'Connor. Harry Truman." Sepia, 10x8 overall, image 8½x6½
(one surface). President Harry S Truman is pictured in the oval office
talking with Basil O'Connor. BASIL O'CONNOR was Franklin D. Roosevelt's
law partner in the firm of Roosevelt & O'Connor from 1924 to March 1,
1933, three days before FDR was sworn in as President. In January 1938, FDR
founded the March of Dimes to fight polio and O'Connor served as an
executive of the organization, which today offers a scholarship in his
name. In 1944, FDR named O'Connor as Chairman of the Central Committee of
the American Red Cross. On May 8, 1947, President Truman signed the
organization's amended Congressional Charter and O'Connor was appointed the
first President of the newly organized American Red Cross. Truman later
accepted O'Connor's letter of resignation. In 1938, FDR had named O'Connor
to a committee to raise funds for the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial Library at
Hyde Park. On July 6, 1957, O'Connor served as the master of ceremonies at
the dedication of the Harry S Truman Library in Independence, Missouri.
Mounting remnants on verso. Glue and paper remnants along the side and top
