HARRY S TRUMAN
Early in the year which saw his first election to the US Senate, he signs a check as judge of the Jackson County, Missouri Court.
Check signed as judge of the Jackson County, Missouri Court: "Harry Truman", 8x3½. Also signed by "Robert L. Hood" as County Clerk and "William Hicks" as Deputy Clerk. Kansas City, Missouri, 1934 April 4. Check no. 1925. Check drawn on the Jackson County Salary Fund, payable to Alex Malo for $108.00. TRUMAN served as a judge on the County Court of Jackson County (1922-1924, 1926-1934) before his election to the U.S. Senate in 1934. While personally honest, Truman was allied in this period with the corrupt political machine of Tom Pendergast, which dominated the politics of Kansas City, Missouri and surrounding Jackson County. Characteristically loyal to his friends, newly sworn in Vice President Truman defied criticism to attend Pendergast's funeral in 1945. Treasurer's stamp and cancellation holes touch full Truman signature, which remains legible. Pencil notes (unknown hand) in margins. Otherwise, fine condition.
