HARRY S TRUMAN
Signed as "V.P. Elect" eight days before his inauguration
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Col Leo Crabbe my/friend & buddy with/best wishes/Harry Truman/U.S.S. Mo./V.P. Elect/Jan 12 '45". B/w, 6½x8½. Taken at the photography studio at Washington's Chase-Statler Hotel. Vice President Truman was scheduled to play poker with some friends at the Statler the evening of the day President Roosevelt died. Truman was U.S. Senator from Missouri from January 3, 1935 until January 17, 1945, when he resigned, having been elected Vice President on November 7, 1944. On January 20, 1945, eight days after signing this photograph, Truman was sworn in as Vice President and President Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated for a fourth term. On April 12, 1945, just 82 days later, President Roosevelt died and Vice President Truman was sworn in as the 33rd President of the United States. This is the first Truman signature signed "V.P. Elect" that we have ever seen. Light surface creases, not evident head on. Lightly rippled. ¼-inch surface scratch at upper right blank background, not evident head on. Mounting glue on verso, no show through. Overall, fine condition.
