HARRY S TRUMAN
Harry Truman signs a black and white publicity photograph of the
Battery "D" reunion held at the Ambassador Hotel on July 29, 1944.
Photograph signed: "Best wishes/Harry Truman" as U.S.
Senator from Missouri and FDR's running mate for Vice President. B/w, 10x8.
Imprinted caption: "Battery 'D'/Reunion/Ambassador Hotel/July 29 - 1944".
Photograph by Anderson, Kansas City, Mo. (imprint on verso). During WWI,
Captain Harry S Truman (1884-1972) commanded D Battery, 1st Battalion, 129th
Field Artillery, which holds the distinction of being the only D Battery in the
Army. Field artillery batteries normally have A, B and C batteries. Truman,
who had been a Major in the Missouri National Guard from 1905-1921,
served as a Democratic U.S. Senator from Missouri from 1935-1945. At
the 1944 Democratic National Convention, which opened on July 19, 1944,
Truman was selected to be President Franklin D. Roosevelt's running mate for
FDR's unprecedented fourth term. Sworn in as FDR's Vice President on
January 20, 1945, Truman served until becoming President (1945-1953) upon
Roosevelt's death on April 12, 1945. Slightly creased at blank corners. Minor
surface creases (not evident head on). Lightly soiled at blank margins. Mounting
remnants and stains on verso (no show through). Overall, fine
condition.
