HARRY S TRUMAN
As Presiding Judge of the County Court, Truman signs a document directing the surveying of the route of a new highway in Jackson County, Missouri.
Typed Document Signed: "Harry Truman" as Presiding Judge and "Leo E. Koehler" as County Surveyor and Ex-Officio Highway Engineer, 3 pages, 8½x14. On light weight paper. Jackson County, Missouri, 1930 March 26. Truman approves Koehler's report regarding compliance with an order of the County Court of Jackson County, Missouri "wherein said County Surveyor and Ex-Officio Highway Engineer was ordered, within fifteen (15) days...to survey, mark out and describe a County Highway from Holmes Street to U.S. Highway No. 50, known as the Red Bridge-Lee's Summit Road, and to prepare a map thereof...." Harry Truman and Jim Pendergast had served together in WWI and after the war, Jim introduced Harry to his uncle Tom Pendergast whose political machine dominated the politics of Kansas City, Missouri and surrounding Jackson County. In 1922, Truman became a judge on the County Court of Jackson County (1922-1924, 1926-1934). Tom Pendergast was convicted on bribery and tax evasion charges in 1939. After his release from prison, Pendergast spent his last years estranged from his family and old friends. Characteristically loyal to his friends, newly sworn in Vice President Truman defied criticism to attend Pendergast's funeral in 1945. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. First page is lightly soiled, nicked at mid-left blank edge. Overall, fine condition.
