Clayton" as Acting Secretary of State, 1 page, 12x9¾. Mounted to a board of the same size. Washington, 1946 July 18. In full: "The United States of America. To all who shall see these presents, greeting: This is to certify that the President of the United States of America in accordance with the order issued by General George Washington at Headquarters, Newburgh, New York, on August 7, 1782, and pursuant to Act of Congress, has awarded the Medal For Merit to Charles P. Taft for Extraordinary Fidelity and Exceptionally Meritorious Conduct." On August 7, 1782, General George Washington established the system for rewarding acts of individual gallantry. It was designed to recognize "any singularly meritorious action" and consisted of a purple cloth heart. CHARLES PHELPS TAFT II (1897-1983) was the son of 27th U.S. President William H. Taft. In World War I, he served in the 12th Field Artillery 2nd Division American Expeditionary Force, commissioned 1st Lieutenant in 1919. In World War II, he served on the President's War Relief Control Board and in the Community War Services Federal Security Agency. Taft later served as Mayor of Cincinnati (1955-1957). His older brother, Robert Taft (1889-1953) was a Republican US Senator from Ohio (1939-1953) and a 3-time Presidential candidate. Lightly shaded from prior framing. Signatures have lightened from exposure to light, but are completely legible. Fine condition.
