President Truman an award bestowed by the American Red Cross on one of its foremost supporters, actress Helen Hayes
Document signed: "Harry Truman" as 33rd U.S. President, 1 page, 14x11. (Washington), 1949. In full: "This Citation is hereby awarded Helen Hayes by The American National Red Cross in grateful recognition of distinguished humanitarian service during the 1949 Fund Campaign". ROLAND "BUNNY" HARRIMAN, younger brother of President Truman's former Secretary of Commerce W. Averill Harriman, was one of the partners, with Prescott Bush (father and grandfather of two U.S. Presidents) in Brown Brothers Harriman, the world's oldest and largest privately owned bank in America. The President of the United States is the Honorary Chairman on the American National Red Cross. HELEN HAYES, an active supporter of the American Red Cross, even devoted an entire show, her March 28, 1943 NBC radio show she called "That They Might Live", to plea for nurses to join the Red Cross. Founded in 1900, Helen Hayes Hospital is today the largest and most comprehensive physical rehabilitation hospital in New York state. Just north of New York City, it was renamed in honor of the First Lady of the American theater and Academy Award-winning actress who devoted 49 years of voluntary leadership and support of its mission.
