Photo Mount inscribed and signed: "To Edw. D. McKim, my 'unknown/soldier' but my most happy/comrade, may he live forever./ Harry Truman" B/w, 10¾x14 overall, image 6½x8¾ (two surfaces). EDWARD D. McKIM had served with Truman in the 129th Field Artillery during WWI. Kim helped him in his first campaign for public office in 1922 when Truman was elected Judge of the County Court, Jackson County, Missouri. McKim helped him in all his elections and even traveled with him on his 1944 vice presidential cross-country campaign. On the day President Roosevelt died, McKim, an insurance executive, was waiting in his suite at Washington's Hotel Statler for the Vice President to show up for a planned poker game which, of course, was cancelled. One of President Truman's first appointments was naming McKim as his Chief Administrative Assistant. After two months, McKim left the White House to work for the new Federal Loan Administrator, also an old Missouri friend. Mounting remnants on verso, no show-through. Slightly shaded at borders touching the writing and signature. Creased, with three ¾-inch horizontal tears at blank left border. Pinhead-size nick at upper left edge of photo, with glue remnant showing. Overall, fine condition.
