HARRY S TRUMAN
President Truman signs a letter expressing his incontinences due to an engagement with Mr. Justice Stone with the art gallery
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman" as President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1946 February 7. To Paul Wooton, President, National Press Club, Washington, D.C. In full: "I appreciated very much your note of the fifth. Mrs. Truman and I enjoyed being present at your inauguration - our only regret was we couldn't stay through the whole ceremony, but we had made an engagement with Mr. Justice Stone to visit the Art Gallery at nine o'clock. I know you will have a most successful administration because you have the common sense to make it go." Harlan Fiske Stone had served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1925-1941, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt promoted him to Chief Justice. On April 22, 1946, just nine weeks after President and Mrs. Truman and Chief Justice Stone visited the National Art Gallery, the 73-year-old Chief Justice died suddenly. Lightly creased with mid-horizontal fold, not at signature. Slightly soiled at blank areas. Fine condition.
