HARRY S TRUMAN
Expecting his first grandchild, the former President tells a friend with five grandsons that he will never be able to catch up to him.
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman", 1p, 7¼x10½. Independence, Missouri, 1957 March 21. To Carl H. Claudy, Executive Secretary, Masonic Service Association of the U.S., Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you very much for your note of February 18th regarding the event in which my daughter is so interested. You surely are lucky to have as many as five grandsons. It is unlikely that I will ever be able to catch up to you, but I am looking forward to the one who's on his way." Truman became a Mason on March 9, 1909 and was a member of Belton Lodge No. 450, Belton, Missouri. He was the only President to attain the 33rd and last degree of the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite for the Southern jurisdiction, which honor was accorded him on October 19, 1945, at the House of the Temple, Washington, D.C. The event in which his daughter was so interested was the birth of her first child, which took place on June 5, 1957, two and a half months after this letter was written. It is interesting to note that Truman refers to "the one who's on his way" and he was right. His daughter Margaret gave birth to a son, Clifton Truman Daniel; her husband was Associate Editor of "The New York Times" Clifton Daniel, Jr. Margaret gave birth to William Wallace Daniel on May 19, 1959, Harrison Gates Daniel on March 3, 1963 and Thomas Daniel on May 28, 1966. Truman was right again. He did not catch up to Claudy, but he came close with four grandsons. Paper clip stain at mid right edge. Fine condition.
