HARRY S TRUMAN
"I never worked harder at anything except the Presidency of the United States."
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman", 1p, 7¼x10½. Independence, Missouri, 1957 April 6. To John N. Wheeler, Vice Chairman, North American Newspaper Alliance, Inc., New York, N.Y. In full: "I certainly did enjoy my visit with you at the Carlyle the other day, and I hope that these articles will continue to please you. I never worked harder at anything except the Presidency of the United States. Thank you, too, for the check you enclosed with your note of the first." After leaving the White House in 1953, Truman was frequently asked to write newspaper articles on various subjects. The Carlyle Hotel, on East 76th Street in New York City, was opened in 1930. The Trumans frequently traveled to New York City to visit their daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Clifton Daniel, who were married April 21, 1956. Daniel was a reporter for "The New York Times" and, from 1964-1969, its Managing Editor. At the time of this letter, Margaret was pregnant with her first child, Clifton Truman Daniel, who was born on June 5, 1957, making Harry Truman a grandfather. Lightly creased, lightly soiled in bottom blank margin. "Contract File" written in pencil in unknown hand in upper right corner. Return address circled in red pencil. 1x½-inch paper loss in upper left blank corner, which also bears numerous staple holes.
