HARRY TRUMAN Typed Letter signed on White House stationery (1948), congratulating a couple on their Golden Wedding Anniversary Typed Letter signed: "Harry Truman", 1 page, 7x9. Washington, D.C., 1948 May 26. On White House letterhead to Professor and Mrs. H. W. Weidner, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In full: "It gives me great pleasure to send you this note of congratulations on the occasion of your Golden Wedding anniversary June 9th. The Companionship which you have shared for half a century surely affords you many treasured memories and with your host of friends I greet you with all good wishes for continued happiness in the years ahead. Very sincerely yours". (1884-1972), the nation's 33rd President (1945-1953), had previously served as U.S. Senator from Missouri, his home state, from 1935-1945. Truman had distinguished himself during his second term with his chairmanship of a committee investigating war profiteering. At the Democratic National Convention in 1944, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt selected Truman as his running mate in his successful bid for a fourth term. Truman, who succeeded to the Presidency upon FDR's death in April 1945, brought about a swift end to WWII, increased the minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour and laid the cornerstones of US Cold War policy: the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the policy of containment. In his second term, secured by a surprising upset victory over Republican Thomas E. Deway, Truman extended Social Security benefits to include approximately 10 million additional people and ordered U.S. forces into action when North Korean troops invaded American-supported South Korea (1950). Harry and his First Lady, Bess Truman, celebrated their own Golden Wedding anniversary in 1969. Toned. One horizontal fold crease through center. Otherwise fine condition.
