HARRY S TRUMAN
Boasting of his connections in the War Department, Senator Truman promises to "put in a good word" for an army colonel seeking promotion to brigadier general.
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1938 June 11. To Colonel Clarence Lininger, Assistant Commandant, The Cavalry School, Fort Riley, Kansas. In full: "Appreciate most highly your letter of the Seventh, and I understand the situation perfectly as it affects Regular Army Colonels when promotions to Brigadier Generals are being considered. I am very well acquainted with everyone connected with the War Department here in Washington, and I shall certainly be most happy at the opportune moment to put in a word where it will do the most good. I hope to see you some time next month while I am at the Field Artillery Camp at Fort Riley." Harry Truman may have met Clarence Lininger when both served in the American Expeditionary France during World War I. Whether or not Senator Truman's assistance was helpful, Clarence Lininger did receive the desired promotion to brigadier general. Truman served as U.S. Senator from Missouri from January 3, 1935 until he resigned on January 17, 1945, three days before he was sworn in as FDR's Vice President. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
