HARRY S TRUMAN
President Truman sends his autograph on some bills and advises that he will look into some records for a former member of Battery D
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman" as U.S. President, 1p, 7x8¾. Washington, D.C., 1949 June 27. On stationery of "The White House" to Mr. Fred J. Schmidt, Kansas City, Kansas. In full: "I am enclosing you the bills autographed as you suggest. I am trying to find out about Frederick L. Howard. As soon as I get an opportunity I'll go through all the records and let you know about him. Sincerely yours". This letter likely refers to an autographed card as Truman's correspondent sent a number of cards to him to be autographed for members of Battery D. FRED J. SCHMIDT was a Sergeant in Battery D during WWII. Truman commanded Battery D from July 11, 1918 until the end of WWI (November 11, 1918). FREDERICK L. HOWARD was a Sergeant in the Headquarters Company of the 129th Field Artillery, which encompassed the 1st Battalion (Batteries A, B and C) and the 2nd Battalion (Batteries D, E and F). HARRY S TRUMAN (1884-1972) served as 33rd U.S. President from 1945-1953. The former U.S. Senator from Missouri (1935-1945), who had been elected FDR's Vice President in 1944, assumed the presidency upon FDR's death on April 12, 1945. Faced with the ordeal of ending WWII (1939-1945), Truman ordered the atomic bombings on Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9). He fought the Cold War with the Truman Doctrine, a policy reducing Communist pressures on Greece and Turkey through economic and military aid. During his second term, Truman sent U.S. forces to South Korea to repel invading North Korean troops. After leaving the presidency, Truman returned to Independence, Missouri, where he wrote his memoirs and was actively involved in the creation and expansion of the Truman Library. Encapsulated. Lightly creased with fold, not at signature. Stray ink marks on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
