HARRY S TRUMAN
Presidential signature on a typed thank you letter to a supportive newspaper publisher
Typed Letter signed: "Harry Truman" as President, 1 page, 6½x4¾. Washington, D.C., 1946 July 29. On White House stationery to J. David Stern, Philadelphia Record, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In full: "The expressions of approval and commendation which your letter of July twenty-sixth brings to me are indeed gratifying. Thank you for your thoughtfulness in writing. Very sincerely yours". Irregular left edge. Mailing fold touches "T" of Truman. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied by White House envelope (7½x4¾) to same addresses, postmarked Washington, D.C. on the same date. Lightly toned. Creased at edges. Otherwise, fine condition. Truman had been President for 15½ months when he signed this letter. Acting on his precept that "the buck stops here," he had already made some difficult choices, including the decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan to end World War II, and "jawboning" a settlement to a potentially crippling railroad strike. His job would become even tougher three months later, when the Republican opposition gained control of both houses of Congress for the first time in 16 years. Despite that setback, another full term as President and many more fateful decisions, especially on foreign policy, remained in the future of the 33rd President. J. David Stern, publisher of the Philadelphia Record and later the New York Post, had been a confidante of President Franklin Roosevelt and a consistent supporter of Democratic Party programs.
