HARRY S TRUMAN
Harry Truman sends a typed letter of thanks for the letters and the thoughts.
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry" as U.S. Senator and Democratic nominee for Vice President, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1944 August 8. To Edward D. McKim, Omaha, Nebraska. In full: "I certainly was glad to get all three of your letters and appreciated every one of them. I am so happy that Larry came out all right, and I am more than glad Ed is safe. I do hope you can make that National Committeeman connection, and if I make the grade on my end of the thing we will certainly show them how in Nebraska. I read the clipping about Ed written by Leonard Welch with a great deal of interest. I always knew he had it in him. Keep me informed of the progress of things and when the campaign starts I want you to go with me." In a postscript, Truman pens: "My best to Mary. The madam was sorry she did [not] see her." The "madam" was Truman's wife, Bess. EDWARD D. McKIM served under Captain Harry S Truman, Battery D, 129th Field Artillery Regiment, 1917-1919, and, after WWI, with Truman in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps. After Truman became President, McKim was Chief Administrative Assistant to the President (1945) and Administrative Assistant to the Federal Loan Administrator (1945). He later served as member of the Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Company (1950-1953). Three weeks before this letter was written, at the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago, July 19-21, 1944, Missouri Senator HARRY S TRUMAN was nominated as FDR's running mate. Mounting remnants at upper margin of verso show through, else fine condition.
