HARRY S TRUMAN
President Truman forwards an autographed card for a man in poor health
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman" as President, 1p, 7x8¾. Washington, D.C., 1949 August 29. On stationery of "The White House" to Mr. Fred J. Schmidt, Kansas City, Kansas. In full: "I am returning Card No. 174, which I have signed for William H. McCarty. I was very sorry to hear that he is in such poor health. Sincerely yours". With original, typed mailing envelope, 3-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., August 30, 1949. Enclosure not present. FRED J. SCHMIDT was a Sergeant in Battery D during WWII. Truman commanded Battery D from July 11, 1918 until the end of WWI (November 11, 1918). WILLIAM H. McCARTY was a Private in Battery D. HARRY S TRUMAN (1884-1972) served as 33rd U.S. President from 1945-1953. The former U.S. Senator from Missouri (1935-1945), who had been elected FDR's Vice President in 1944, assumed the presidency upon FDR's death on April 12, 1945. Faced with the ordeal of ending WWII (1939-1945), Truman ordered the atomic bombings on Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9). He fought the Cold War with the Truman Doctrine, a policy reducing Communist pressures on Greece and Turkey through economic and military aid. During his second term, Truman sent U.S. forces to South Korea to repel invading North Korean troops. After leaving the presidency, Truman returned to Independence, Missouri, where he wrote his memoirs and was actively involved in the creation and expansion of the Truman Library. Encapsulated. Lightly creased with fold, not at signature. Stray ink mark beneath lower line of type. Paper clip impression at upper left margin touches "The" in The White House. Fine condition.
