HARRY S TRUMAN
Truman sends a typed letter of thanks for the press release and the photograph
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman", 1p, 7¼x8½. Independence, Missouri, 1959 September 3. To Hon. Charles Patrick Clark, Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you very much for the press release you enclosed with your letter of August 31st. I know you will do a good job. The color photograph of the Reunion Luncheon is here. It arrived without an accompanying letter, and not knowing if it were a gift or if I was supposed to sign and return it, I postponed any acknowledgement until I heard from you. Now I'll not feel guilty about keeping it. Many, many thanks." Clark had served as Associate Chief Counsel to the Truman Committee. The Reunion Luncheon may have been of members of the Truman Committee. On March 1, 1941, the U.S. Senate had created the Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program. After Senator Truman was appointed chairman, it became known as the Truman Committee. Truman resigned as chairman in 1944 after he received the Democratic nomination for Vice President. The day Truman wrote this letter, he hosted comedian Jack Benny in filming an episode of Benny's television program in the Truman Library in Independence. Blank portion trimmed off at bottom. Two file holes at top margin. Fine condition.
