HARRY S TRUMAN
President Truman sends a typed letter to see how he can help an old comrade
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman" as President, 1p, 7x9. The White House, Washington, 1951 October 1. To Fred Schmidt, Kansas City, Kansas. In full: "Thanks a lot for your letter about Frank H. Jameson. I will proceed to do what I can for him. I am more than happy to have the new list of addresses for the members of the Battery." In WWI, Truman was Commander of Battery D, which Truman, according to one historian, called a "spirited group of Irishmen and German Catholics" from Kansas City. Harry S Truman had been Vice President only 82 days when he assumed the presidency upon Franklin D. Roosevelt's death (April 12, 1945). Faced with the ordeal of ending World War II, Truman oversaw the surrender of Germany (May 7) and ordered the atomic bombings on Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9). He fought the Cold War with the Truman Doctrine (1947), a policy granting Greece and Turkey $400 million in economic and military aid to help them fight Communist aggression. By the end of 1945, Truman had introduced economic measures which would become part of his Fair Deal program (1949). As a result, the minimum wage was increased from 40 to 75 cents an hour through an amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, and Social Security benefits were extended to include approximately ten million more people (1950). In his second term, Truman ordered U.S. forces into action when North Korean troops invaded American-supported South Korea (1950). Lightly creased. Folds not at signature. Lightly shaded at upper blank margin, which has light paper clip impression at left. Overall, fine condition.
