HARRY S TRUMAN
President Truman sends a typed letter of regret that he will not be able to visit with his old colleague
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x8. On Senate stationery but written from Independence, Missouri, 1938 October 10. To Colonel Clarence Lininger, Assistant Commandant, The Cavalry School, Fort Riley, Kansas. In full: "I certainly do wish I could be with you for at least one day, but it just looks as if there isn't a possibility. I am completely tied up for every day this week and every day next week. That is what a man gets for being in my position." In WWI, Lieutenant Colonel CLARENCE LININGER had been Adjutant General of the 85th Division of the 5th Army Corps. Army horsemen and the training they received at the Cavalry School made them among the finest mounted soldiers in the world. Horse shows, hunts and polo matches were held at Fort Riley. These activities gave rise to the perception of a special quality of living at the fort that came to be known as the "Life of Riley". After WWI, the War Department directed that service schools be created for all arms of service. HARRY S TRUMAN served as U.S. Senator from Missouri from January 3, 1935 until he resigned on January 17, 1945, three days before he was sworn in as FDR's Vice President. Blank 8x2 portion neatly trimmed off at bottom. Lightly creased. Horizontal fold touches signature. Paper clip stain at upper left.
