HARRY S TRUMAN
Harry Truman sends a typed letter of thanks for the pictures and
letter.
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman", 1p, 7¼x10½.
Independence, Missouri, 1963 October 21. To Mr. William B. Arthur, Managing
Editor, LOOK, Cowles Magazines and Broadcasting, Inc., New York. In
full: "You were as kind and thoughtful as you can be to send me that
clipping from Look with the pictures of World War veterans - particularly, World
War I. Of course, I didn't have any difficulty in recognizing No.8. That is the
way I looked when I was in command of a Battery in the First World War. I
will be looking forward to the November 5th, issue and will wonder how many
members of my former Battery will recognize the old man at this late date. There
are only about 70 or 80 of them still alive. Thanks a lot for your
consideration. I appreciate it most highly. Sincerely yours," A few weeks
after landing in France in April 1918, Truman was made Captain and given command
of Battery D of the Second Battalion of the 129th Field Artillery. By
September 1918, he was taking part in the fighting in the Argonne Forest, and in
October his unit joined with the 35th Division, firing on the German-held city
of Metz. Truman had entered military service as a Lieutenant in a National Guard
artillery company that was taken into the regular service in August 1917. He
was mustered out of service in May 1918, shortly after being promoted to
Major. Rust paper clip stain in upper left blank margin, overall, fine
condition.
