HARRY S TRUMAN
Truman, himself a Mason of long standing, signs a typed letter referring a question to a Washington expert on the Masonic order
Typed Letter signed: "Harry Truman", 1 page, 7¼x8¼. Kansas City, Missouri, 1956 October 31. On personal letterhead to Roy Webb, Bakersfield, California. In full: "Your letter came while I was out on a tour. It just got to the top of the pile of mail that accumulated while I was away. I am writing to Carl Claudy in Washington, asking him to send you immediately what they have on the Saints John. My files are all stored, as you know, and I haven't been able to find the article I was thinking about which would have answered your question - but I am sure Carl can send you what you need. Sincerely yours". Harry Truman (1884-1972), the 33rd President, was initiated into the Order of Freemasons in 1909, and remained a member all his life, the longest Masonic tenure of any US President. His offices within the order included Grand Master of the Missouri Lodge (1940-1941). Carl Claudy (1879-1957), a poet and prolific author of books on subjects from baseball to photography, was especially expert on Masonic traditions. He was Grandmaster of the District of Columbia Lodge during Truman's Presidency. According to Truman's appointment record at the Truman Library archives on line, the President held several "off the record" meetings with Roy Webb in the White House. The Saints John - St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist - are the patron saints of Masonry. Irregular lower edge. Staple holes at upper right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
