HARRY S TRUMAN
President Truman sends a thank you letter for the feedback on two volumes about his life
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry Truman", ¼p, 7¼x10½. Kansas City, Missouri, 1956 November 20. On his personal letterhead to Mr. David H. Morgan, Wasco, California. Begins: "Dear Dave". In full: "Your letter of the 17th was very much appreciated, and of course I was glad to send you the two volumes of my Memoirs. I did a lot of work on them, and I believe they filled a niche that needed to be filled. Sincerely yours." In 1953, HARRY S TRUMAN (1884-1972) left the White House, where he had served as 39th U.S. President from 1945-1953, to retire to his home in Independence, Missouri to write his memoirs and live the life of "Mr. Citizen". The decision to write his memoirs was based on Truman's strong interest in history and his desire to present his own views of his years in the White House. The first volume, Years of Decision, was published in November 1955; the second, Years of Trial and Hope, was published in 1956. At the time of this letter, Truman was also actively involved in the development of his presidential library in Independence. He had broken ground for the facility on May 8, 1955 and The Harry S Truman Library was dedicated on July 6, 1957, less than seven months after this letter. In December 1957, Truman signed an agreement with the National American Newspaper Alliance to write a series of articles for publication across the country. The first article appeared in January 1957. In 1916, Truman had become a partner in Morgan & Company. Although the Oklahoma oil well firm later went bankrupt, Truman remained lifelong friends with his former partner, DAVID H. MORGAN. Fine condition.
