HERBERT HOOVER
Handsome brown-hued black and white 7¼x10¾ photo inscribed to a veterans' post, apparently signed shortly after he was nominated for President
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Arthur Calvin Post No 5/With Kind Regards of/Herbert Hoover". B/w with brown hue, 7¼x10¾ overall, image 5x8 (one surface). Ink biographic caption (unknown hand) and date: July 28, 1928. Herbert Clark Hoover (1874-1964), a mining engineer and self-made millionaire, served as the 31st U.S. President from 1929-1933. Hoover received the Republican Presidential nomination on June 14, 1928, six weeks before the date on this letter. Blamed by many voters for the Great Depression, he was defeated in his bid for re-election by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Hoover, a capable administrator, had headed the Food Administration to provide relief to Europe and Russia during and after WWI and served as Secretary of Commerce under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge (1921-1928). The second of four Presidents to attain the age of 90 years - Ford and Reagan later joined Hoover and John Adams - Hoover lived a record 31 years after leaving the presidency. During his "retirement", he was appointed to commissions to oversee government agencies by Presidents Harry S Truman (1947) and Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953). Hoover also wrote a number of books and articles. Date and biography (unknown hand) at lower margin. Mounting remnant on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
