HERBERT HOOVER
He has inscribed and signed on the flyleaf this copy of his book, The Challenge to Liberty.
Book inscribed and signed: "To Mr. A.C. Phelps/With the Good Wishes of/Herbert Hoover" on the first blank flyleaf. His book, The Challenge to Liberty, 224p, 5¾x7¾, hardcover. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York: 1935. From the Introduction: "For the first time in two generations the American people are faced with the primary issue of humanity and all government -- the issue of human liberty. Not only in the United States, but throughout the world, the whole philosophy of individual liberty is under attack...Liberty conceives that the mind and spirit of men can be free only if the individual is free to choose his own calling, to develop his talents, to win and keep a home sacred from intrusion, to rear children in ordered security...In every generation men and women of many nations have died that the human spirit may be thus free...It is my hope to show that to resume the path of Liberty is not to go backward...The hope of America and the world is to regenerate Liberty with its responsibilities and its obligations -- not to abandon it...It is the purpose of this examination, therefore, upon behalf of human liberty, to survey briefly the movement of revolution through the world since the Great War...." In original dust jacket, which is shaded with lightly chipped edges and has a ¾-inch tear at top left, all paper intact. Signature page is lightly shaded. Pencil note, unknown hand, at bottom right corner. Book is internally sound.
