HERBERT HOOVER
Herbert Hoover signs a typed letter about the mine the Gold Circle Consolidated.
Typed Letter Signed: "Herbert Hoover", 1p, 7¼x10½. The Waldorf-Astoria, New York, 1941 April 17. To Lawrence K. Requa, Idaho Almaden Mines Company, Weiser, Idaho. In full: "Please find enclosed [not present] some inconsequential correspondence about this supposed gold mine called the Gold Circle Consolidated." HOOVER was a mining engineer and, having graduated from Leland Stanford University in 1895, traveled around the world as a consultant between 1895-1913. The Weiser Mercury mine was discovered in 1927. The property was leased after additional finds in 1936 to LAWRENCE K. REQUA, who formed the Idaho Almaden Company. Between 1939 and 1942, 4,000 flasks of mercury at a value of $750,000 were recovered. We could find no information about "Gold Circle Consolidated", which seems to give credence to Hoover's description of it as a "supposed gold mine". The town of Gold Circle, southwest of Elko, Nevada, was so named because gold mines formed a circle around the town. So the mine, if it existed, most probably was located in that area. Slightly creased. 2 file holes and light paper clip impression at upper blank edge. Fine condition.
