Typed Letter Signed: "Herbert Hoover", 1 page, 7¼x10½. The Waldorf
Astoria Towers, New York, 1952 April 18. To Carl Haverlin, Radio Pioneers, New
York. In full: "I am very proud of the honor which the Radio Pioneers
awarded to me. I want to thank you and your associates. May I take this
opportunity to thank you for the Quaker books that you are sending to me at
Stanford University. And as a reward, I am sending you Volume II of my Memoirs,
which is to be published on April 28th. With appreciation and kind regards."
Hoover was the first Quaker to be elected U.S. President; Nixon was the
second. Hoover's Memoirs were published in three volumes: Vol. I,
Years of Adventure, 1874-1920 (1951); Vol. II, The Cabinet and the
Presidency, 1920-1933 (1952) and Vol. III, The Great Depression,
1929-1941 (1952). Hoover's election as President in 1928 was just the
third presidential election in which returns were broadcast on the radio. Carl
Haverlin (1899-1985) was a radio broadcaster. He did the first play by play
radio coverage of the Rose Bowl in 1925. He was an executive of Broadcast
Music, Inc. from 1940 to his retirement in 1964. Horizontal fold touches top
flourish of "H" in "Hoover". Staple holes, paperclip impressions and "File"
(unknown hand) written in pencil at upper left blank corner. Overall, fine
condition.
