President Hoover types a letter of acknowledgment about a name to be submitted to be appointed to the Federal Farm Board.
Typed Letter Signed: "Herbert Hoover" as President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1931 June 8. To Senator Walter F. George. In full: "I have received your letter of June 5th in which you ask that consideration be given to the name of Dr. Tait Butler for appointment on the Federal Farm Board. Thank you for writing to me about Dr. Butler." Democrat WALTER F. GEORGE represented Georgia in the U.S. Senate from 1922-1957. In 1891, DR. TAIT BUTLER founded the "Southern Farm Gazette", which later merged with the "Progressive Farmer" magazine. He later served as president of the American Association of Farmers' Institute Workers. At the urging of President Hoover, the Federal Farm Board was established as an independent agency by the Agricultural Marketing Act on June 15, 1929, "to stabilize commodity prices and to promote the sale of agricultural products, in part by encouraging cooperative marketing associations". It was replaced on May 27, 1933 by FDR's Farm Credit Administration. One week before George's letter, on June 1, 1931, President Hoover accepted the resignation of Charles C. Teague as a member of the Federal Farm Board. Another member, Samuel R. McKelvie, resigned three weeks later, but Dr. Butler was not appointed to either vacancy by the Republican President. Lightly soiled at blank margins. Fold creases not at signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
