The President congratulates Emanuel Cohen, the editor of With Byrd at the South Pole, a documentary of Byrd's 1928 Antarctic expedition.
Typed Letter Signed: "Herbert Hoover" as 31st U.S. President, 1p, 7x9. Washington, D.C., 1930 June 21. On letterhead of "The White House" to Emanuel Cohen, Esq., Paramount News, New York City. In full: "This is by way of telling you how thoroughly I enjoyed the picture 'With Byrd at the South Pole'. It is my understanding that you were largely responsible for it. I wish to congratulate you and the men you sent to the Antarctic with Admiral Byrd upon this splendid presentation. Yours faithfully". With Byrd at the South Pole, a documentary of Byrd's 1928 expedition and flight over the South Pole, was released on June 28, 1930, a week after this letter was signed, so the President had seen an advanced screening. EMANUEL COHEN (1892-1977), the editor of this film, had been hired by Paramount in 1926, and he would produce both shorts and feature films (1932-1938) for the studio (after 1935, when he was fired, his production company worked with Paramount, producing several Mae West films and Bing Crosby musicals). HERBERT CLARK HOOVER (1874-1964), the first President born west of the Mississippi River, served as 31st President of the U.S. from 1929-1933. The stock market had crashed on October 29, 1929, resulting in the Great Depression, but the economy had begun to improve somewhat in 1930. On November 4, 1930, less than five months after Hoover signed this letter, however, the Republicans lost eight seats in the U.S. Senate, barely holding on to a 48-47 lead. For the first time since 1916, the Democrats took control of the House, 220-214. Prior to taking office, Hoover had been Secretary of Commerce (1921-1928) under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Hoover lived longer after his term of office than any other U.S. President: 31 years and 231 days. Lightly creased with fold, not at signature. Lightly soiled.
