HERBERT HOOVER
Herbert Hoover sends a typed letter of thanks for the letter.
Typed Letter Signed: "Herbert Hoover", 1p, 7¼x10¼.No
place, 1933 July 11. On personal letterhead to Lorena Phillips,
Oakland, California. In full: "I deeply appreciate your letter of July
3. I want you to know that I am grateful for the friendship which animated it. I
wish to take this occasion also to express my hope for your prosperity and
contentment. Yours faithfully". Herbert Clark Hoover (1874-1964), the
first President born west of the Mississippi River, served as 31st
President of the U.S. from 1929-1933. The stock market had crashed on
October 29, 1929, resulting in the Great Depression, but the economy had begun
to improve somewhat in 1930. On November 4, 1930, however, the Republicans lost
eight seats in the U.S. Senate, barely holding on to a 48-47 lead. For the first
time since 1916, the Democrats took control of the House, 220-214. Prior to
taking office, Hoover had been Secretary of Commerce (1921-1928) under
Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Hoover lived longer after his
term of office than any other U.S. President: 31 years and 231 days. Lightly
creased with folds, through "H", "b", and "t" of Herbert and "H" of Hoover.
Overall, fine condition.
